Когда мы говорим, что Москва в XVII веке рейдернула Киевскую митрополию, следует также помнить, что все это происходило при активном содействии тогдашних наших правителей - Самойловича и Мазепы, который был его правой рукой. В частности, Т. Таирова-Яковлева пишет, что Самойлович желал стать чем-то вроде удельного князя, будучи сам гетманом и имея родственниками киевских воеводу и митрополита. А Мазепа, возможно, надеялся, что патриарх Московский станет более эффективным защитником православия в Украине, чем Константинопольский (имея в виду также Правобережье, которое оставалось за Польшей). Также возможно, что он имел надежды на реформирование московской церкви по киевскому образцу. Так или иначе, оба приложили усилия для переподчинения церкви, за что (на самом деле нет) Россия позже отправила Самойловича в ссылку, а Мазепе объявила анафему. И нужно благодарить патриарха Варфоломея, что он говорит о незаконности самой сделки, но не о неблаговидной роли нашей верхушки.
