История острова начинается с тех далеких времен, когда сорок тысяч лет назад группы людей из древнего Китая перешли через перешеек суши на Борнео. Первой из известных на данный момент стоянок стало ущелье Ниа. Подтверждением тому являются археологические находки, свидетельствующие о жизни и смерти древних людей: каменные орудия, погребальные принадлежности и артефакты, а также фрагменты черепа «Ниасского Человека», возраст которых насчитывает 35-40 тысячелетий. О более поздних поселениях нам говорят наскальные рисунки, которые сохранились и до нашего времени. Впоследствии местные жители ушли из Ниа и мигрировали на восток через Тихий океан.

Длительное время Борнео не было ни на каких картах, и только в 1521 году во время легендарного кругосветного путешествия Магеллана его корабли пришли к берегам Борнео. (Сам Магеллан был убит на Филиппинах несколькими месяцами ранее.) Есть некоторые свидетельства о том, что один итальянец по имени Людовико де Вартема посетил Борнео в 1505 году, Борнео упоминается и в дневниках Марко Поло, которые датируются XIII веком. Но официально считается, что наш остров был открыт только в 1521 году. Однако еще в VII-VIII веках до нашей эры, когда Борнео еще не было на картах, на острове уже были налажены торговые отношения с Китаем, Японией, Индией и арабскими странами. В качестве торговой валюты шли перец, акулий плавник, птичьи гнезда, камфара, жемчуг, черепаший панцирь и сандаловое дерево.

Kuching has lots of interesting places to visit. Historical places, natural tropical rainforest, cultural activity, a number of national park,windy caves, wildlife centre, sandy beaches, just to name a few.
Kuching won't dissapoint you. She offers great experience that u can't get elsewhere.

Kuching is a peaceful city full with warmth and kindness of the people. Despite the dirverse ethnics (name 27 ethnic), people live harnimously.......Cleanliness is Kuching another pride, for your imformation, Kuching city has been awarded the statues of Garden City. Historical place can been seen everywhere in Kuching as the heritage of the Rule of the "White Rajahs).
Variety of food is another attraction. Ranging from local cuisine like the chinese, malay, native food to international buffet, Kuching will alway keep you finger licking good.
Natural attration like the Bako national park, semenggok orang utan rehabilitation centre, Gunung gading ( where u can find rafflesia just to name a few, sure will drive all the nature lovers cravy.
Sarawak cultural village showcase you the lifestyle of the people........

Kuching is the best place for having a vacation. It is so relexing, you can enjoy the nature that you cannot find in other countries. People here are friendly, warmth and caring.
Kuching is very peaceful, you are safe to walk around the city or in the jungle. You can enjoy yourselves various types of activity while you are here. You can go for jungle tracking in the National Park to enjoy real nature. Example Bako National Park. The beaches here are clean, natural and full of sunshine just like the people here.
You can stay at Holiday Inn,Damai Beach the rate is cheap with 5 star rate as it is just a walking distance to the Cultural Village where you can see the life style of all the races that live in Sarawak.

I'm now living in KL. Have been to many cities and places around Malaysia, I think Kuching City, the best place to stay. Even better than KL. If I'm in Kuching, a place of must is the Kuching Waterfront. Its a peaceful place. And another places of interest are waiting to be discovered. One fact, Kuching is the cleanest city in Malaysia. Its like Singapore!

Kuching is a heaven for souveniers which comes is range of prices from affordable trinklets to very artistic handworks.
The town is beautiful and if you get a chance, take an hour's drive to Serikin which is in Bau, and visit the border weekend market there with traders selling a whole variety of cheap Indonesian products.I truly enjoyed my visit there and I will surely come back for another visit with my family and friends.

The good things :

- Traffic jam not as bad as Penang.
- People are friendly
- Many greens
- River is clean

The bad things :

- Expensive to get from 1 place to another. Eg: From Merdeka Palace to Satok, a 5 mins ride, the cab charge RM7.00 !!

- Food, for those from peninsular, food is not tasty at all. But the grilled chicken in Satok is a screamer. I never miss it during my quarterly visit.

- Shops closed down early. It's rare to see shops open beyond 7.00PM.

Kuching is a good town. What I dislike about Kuching is it has very limited public transport. It is very difficult to find a taxi sometimes to move around the town.Otherwise, its one of the most exotic place to visit. The town and the environment is clean and lovely. Please improve the road service and make it easy like in Kuala Lumpur. The town is clean and lots of things to see. Its water front has a beautiful view that makes our heart feels lonely.The mount Santubong makes me want to go to Damai Beach all the time. It's very lovely there and I feel so lonely when I'm there. I love to come back especially to enjoy the scenery. The best of all is people are friendly.

Lea Sports Centre located at Ground Floor of Sarawak Plaza Kuching offered a wide range of branded sportswear and accessories such as Adidas, Nike, Reebok, Puma, Lotto, Dunlop & etc. Limited Malaysia Open souvenirs were sold at reasonable price too.
