The Profession of Gasman

From the ancient times of human’s history it is known, that the natural gas escaping from the Earth, sometimes was lit up from a lightning or a fire and burned during the many years. In those days it seemed as inexplicable phenomena for people, when they saw the flame in the shape of a candle, rising above the ground or above the water. This phenomenon seemed to be something like a divine sign. These phenomena were named "eternal fires". At the piedmonts of Small Caucasus "eternal fires" were known approximately for six thousand years B.C.
Nobody of us can imagine today our apartments without gas. Now almost one hundred million of people in Russia are using gas. But actually we are still not able to imagine completely, what opportunities are appearing with the blue fire. The great scientist, our countryman, Dimity Ivanovich Mendeleyev called gas as a fuel of the future. In 1863, for the first time in the world, he has suggested to apply pipelines for gas transportation.
The first mention of pipelines concerns to the beginning of our era when people in China used bamboo pipes for transfer of natural gas. At the end of XVIII-th century Europeans began using pipes made of pig-iron, which were replaced by steel pipes in XIX-XXI-st centuries.
If we want gas to come to our cities, villages, factories or plants, to our apartments, it is necessary to stretch the pipeline from a gas field up to the city or a settlement, and then to join up to consumers through millions of pipes. A long intense work of thousands of workers and experts in different professions is required, to stretch a gas line: geologists, drill men and the builders of gas mains.
During the last years the profession of gasman becomes especially demanded in the Republic of Tatarstan, unlike elsewhere in Russia. I’ll try to explain my idea. It is well-known, that the economy of Tatarstan and the city of Kazan has been highly developed for the last fifteen years. The oil-and-gas industry remains the major branch of our economy.
During the last ten years the Government of the Republic of Tatarstan along with the Chief Managers of "Tattransgaz" Joint-Stock Company uses the best efforts for the accelerated gasification of our cities and villages.
According to statistics, in the beginning of 1990, only 5 per cent of villages benefited from the gas fuel. And in 1995 the President of the Republic of Tatarstan Mintimer Sharipovich Shaymiev has signed the well-known Decree, and according to this Decree "The Program on Gasification of Settlements of the Republic of Tatarstan in 1995-2001" was accepted.
A big heroic work of the gasmen has been done for six years. As a result 99,39 per cent of cities and 95,1 percent of all our villages got gas. It is rather a big success in Russia, so on the average only one third of all Russian villages has been gasificated. Some kind of the one more record for Tatarstan.
I was interested in the history of the enterprise where my father has worked for many years. This was a glorious and a famous history.
The start was in the post-war years. In that time one of the main tasks in the Soviet State was to provide the national economy and the population of the country with the energy and a heat. In the Tatar Autonomous Republic associated oil gas also was extracted. At that time near the village of Minnibayevo the first gas-processing factory was constructed. On November, 11, 1951 the construction of "Minnibayevo-Kazan" gas main had started. The gas main had 128 inches diameter and 156 miles length. It was the third gas main in the USSR after the «Saratov-Moscow» pipe-line and the «Dashava-Kiev-Moscow» gas line, and the first gas main in the Republic of Tatarstan. In order to supply the reception of gas from a built gas main and the development of the gasification process in Kazan, in July, 1, 1954 "Kazangorgaz" Trust Company was organized. There were thirty two workers in the company at that time. Three emergency-repair posts were created to support the gas main in a good technical condition; one of them was in Kazan. So it was the very beginning of the "Tattransgaz" Joint-Stock Company and its subdivision "Kazangorgaz".
At the end of December, 1954 the first gas torch was lit near to Kazan. In March, 1955 "National Scientific-Industrial Enterprise named after V.I.Lenin" became the first industrial consumer of natural gas. And on November, 21 of that year the long-awaited blue fuel came to the first eighty two apartments in the house № 20 along the Stepan Halturin Street.
Today the "Kazangorgaz" enterprise has on its service more than one thousand and four hundred miles of gas lines and more than eight hundred and fifty miles of it is underground. "Kazangorgaz" stably carries out reliable gas supply to more than one thousand enterprises and the power stations, the industrial enterprises, medical and educational institutions. More than three hundred and fifty thousand families are using natural gas nowadays.
"Tattransgaz" Joint-Stock Company is famous with its chief managers who worked hard on gasification of the Republic, here they are: Garey Hasanovich Gazizov, Ravil Abdullovich Muslimov, Darwin Galimzjanovich Ahmetov. With special senses my parents remember Anatoly Viktorovich Perminov. He headed "Kazangorgaz" enterprise in 1974-1998. For the 25 years of his working at "Kazangorgaz" Anatoly Viktorovich had only four records at his work-record card: the master, the chief of gas-filling station, the chief engineer, and the head of enterprise.
Anatoly Viktorovich devoted his life to develop and strengthen the enterprise, as well as to create a powerful base of supplying gas in our city, improving constantly the working and the life conditions of the personnel.
The present heads also continue glorious traditions of the predecessors and bring their own contribution to development of gas branch in our Republic, they are: the General Director of "Tattransgaz" Joint-Stock Company Rafkat Abdulhaevich Kantyukov and the Chief of "Kazangorgaz" enterprise Vladimir Egorovich Selivanov.
The management of "Tattransgaz" and "Kazangorgaz" pay special attention to care of resting of the workers and their families. Workers` resting as well as sports events, concerts of amateur performances is held.
I would like to tell how I spent this summer vacations. This year together with the children of other gas-workers I had a trip to the city of Balchik in Bulgaria. It was my first trip abroad. Solar beaches, spending time with the new friends of mine, excursions on the Bulgarian cities have left unforgettable impressions in my memory. I am very thankful for such an opportunity. It was my old dream to visit abroad.
We need to tell at first, that the profession of gas worker is rather dangerous. In the certain concentration gas is explosive. Other danger is that gas is poisonous. And third danger is that gas burns. Besides, at the starting-up of gas, poisonous components are used, for example, in order to prevent pipes from clogging they use methanol. Sixteen gramme of this substance is fatal, and from eight grammes human loses sight. It is impossible to become a gasman for the short period of time; many years are required for this. And there is one more thing to remember: it is necessary to respect gas.
Providing people with gas is a very noble, but at the same time, is a dangerous work. Safety depends on the person who works with gas. Thus, gasmen have a special psychological quality like the feeling of responsibility and the iron discipline.
Except for everything, gasmen are constant people. Many of them work in this branch of economy for twenty years and more. Gasmen are hardy people. Their work is often stressful. The constant feeling of danger also is very unhealthy.
By the example of my father, Gumar Mahmutovich Zinatullin, I can say, that gasmen may seem to be closed people, they are not verbose, about such people they say «one can go to investigation with them», so in fact these are reliable people. Actually, what may seem like isolation at the first sight, in reality is a professional endurance and patience. The saying "look before you leap", in my opinion, completely approaches to gasmen. Externally gloomy look of gasmen actually testifies to absence of impulsiveness and irascibility. Even their noble and pride bearing, and a confident sight testify to it.
Specificity of gasmen’s work is that the harmonious work of people of different trades, such as drivers, mechanics, dispatchers, welders, operators, skilled managers is required.
I am proud that my father works as a gas welder at the "Kazangorgaz" enterprise. My father collects pipes and welds backlashes between the ends of pipes. The most responsible moment is to put the very first weld. No one drop of metal should penetrate inside of a pipe. Otherwise, metal tears interfere with normal movement of gas. This work is so responsible, that the welded joint is checked with the help of roentgen. For checking the work of welders there are laboratorians near them.
Next summer, after leaving school, I think to enter the Kazan State Architectural Building Academy (KISI) to the "Department of heat-gas supply and ventilation". I have decided thus to go after my father and to become a gas man.
So I belief, that the profession of gasman is very cool.
