There are few cities in the world that so directly participated in the events, which changed the course of History. Scientists assume that the Gauls, who built the small settlement on the bank of the Seine, had founded Paris. Soon the Romans led by Guy Julius Caesar, who mentioned the settlement named Lutetia in his war notes, captured it. Under the threat of barbarian invasion the initial settlement was moved to the Cite Island, from where the gradual extension of the town along the banks of the river began. Paris turned into the real capital of the country in 987, when Hugues the Capet founded the new royal dynasty and gave this status to the city, which is preserved in the course of entire French history. Since then Paris has become not merely the urban development centre, but the cultural one as well.
One of the most wonderful periods of Parisian history was bound up with the reign of Philippe II Augustus (1180 - 1223). It was during his reign when construction of the Louvre started. Parisian schools, comprising near 20 000 students, were amalgamated into the University at about the same time (1215). Another bloom of the city was under the reign of Louis IX (1226 - 1270). The St. Chapel Church was built and construction of the Notre-Dame de Paris advanced a lot at that time. Robert de Sorbonne extended in the course of time and the small school turned into the Paris University, where the scientists from all over Europe, wandering from one university to another, reached out.
