Goth Rock

Эстетика и термин Goth Rock часто понимаются неправильно. Goth Rock является ответвлением от post-punk оформившимся в первой половине 80-х. Goth Rock считается самым темным и мрачным направлением рок музыки андеграунда и в значительной степени заслужил такую репутацию, но в наши дни это проявляется большей частью в имидже и театральности групп и одетых в черное последователях.
Goth Rock соединил холодное бесчувственное звучание синтезаторов и Post-Punk Rock, которые подчеркивали безысходность, печаль и грусть.
На раннем этапе тексты были обычно интроспективные и очень личные, но поэтическая чувственность вскоре вызвала интерес к художественному романтизму, болезненности, религиозной таинственности, и/или сверхъестественному и мистике.
Сначала Goth Rock не был признан критиками как отдельное направление музыки и характеризовался увлечением исполнителей витиеватой поэзией, нескончаемым унынием, угрюмостью, печалью, скорбью, мрачностью, траурностью и чрезмерной мелодраматичностью.
Каким-то образом это породило увлеченную и быстро растущую субкультуру, которая сохранила эстетику и после того как времена Goth Rock закончились
Праотцами Goth-Rock является английская post-punk группа Joy Division, чья унылая, отрешенная, всепоглощающе интроспективная музыка и тексты заложили основу для GOTH, но моментом рождения Goth-Rock стал дебютный сингл группы Bauhaus "Bela Lugosi's Dead" (1979). Тогда же уже популярные post-punk группы, такие как Cure и Siouxsie & the Banshees, стали полноценными goth группами, а их густой макияж и темная одежда стали основным способом самовыражения фанатов.
Популярность Goth-Rock распространилась среди чувствительной, отчужденной молодежи (сначала Англии, где зародилось большинство групп, потом в Америке), стиль одежды становился все более необычным и чудным, а изначальное звучание стало узнаваемо и закрепилось.
The Cure, Siouxsie & the Banshees и the Mission UK привнесли в звучание элементы поп и альтернативы, в то время как the Sisters of Mercy, Fields of the Nephilim и американская группа Christian Death сделали звук тяжелее развиваясь под влиянием metal.
В конце 80-х изначальная goth-rock волна прекратила существование, но музыка трансформировалась в новые формы и продолжила оказывать влияние на многие другие темные направления.
В 90-е годы goth звучание стало объединяться с industrial, так же как и darkwave объединился с synth-pop и dream-pop 80-х.
Во второй половине 90-х влияние Goth Rock неожиданно проявилось во всем Heavy Metal. Новое поколение Progressive Black Metal групп приобрело звучание и имидж Goth Rock, в то время как многие альтернативные группы так же заимствовали визуальный имидж Goth Rock (в том числе Marilyn Manson, который, не смотря на бесчисленные сообщения СМИ не является goth-rock исполнителем)
